Animals in the Falklands
Not many dogs here as pets...

Port Howard - lost count of the dolphins swimming around, families including babies all playing and going from lazy porpoising to sprint in no time at all.

They are Commerson's Dolphins - tap on the metal pipes of the jetty and they come and say "Hello".

Sealions! These are at Sealion Island - not easy to see with the naked eye, never mind photograph.
One of these upset a visitor the day before, catching and eating a penguin along the coast - and another one got eaten by an Orca the same day.

Plenty of working and wild life though.

Sea Lion Island has lots of wildlife - here are some elephant seals which have the greatest disparity between male and female of any animal - mature males are up to four times the size of the female. And at 9 metres, a bit of a surprise if you bump into one as you round the Tusac grass clump.

Elephant Seals

Elephant because of the big nose, as well as the size.

Elephant Seals In Sea

More elephant seals - in February, when we saw these, they are moulting and just lie about looking sorry for themselves.
When you do see them go into the water, they are transformed - no doubt about their preferred medium.
About twice the size of a human - and these aren't the big, bad boys.

This one is lying on its side - quite offputting if you don't realise it.

Elephant seal at Sealion in dunes

This elephant seal is angry because a Tussacbird has been pecking at a sore spot on his back.
The tiny bird is finding something tasty - may be better not to peculate as to what - and the elephant seal can't get to the bird which is doing the equivalent of itching between his shoulder blades.
When he turns and roars, the bird skips away for a couple of minutes - but he will be back...
